SharePoint Prompts Login when Opening a XLSX file on a Publishing Site

Solution:

Edit the file “serverfilesExcelServer.xml” under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML

Comments this line:

<Mapping FileExtension=”xlsx” RedirectUrlTemplate= “/_layouts/xlviewer.aspx?id=|0” NoGetRedirect=”TRUE”/>

  1. Hi,

    Whenever users click the existing XLSX link in our SharePoint site, they seem to get a broken link. DOCX and PPTX files work just fine.
    I tried the solution in your article, but to no avail. Do you have any suggestions how I can try to resolve this issue?

    Thank you.

  2. I had a similar problem, only in my case it was causing a ‘page cannot be found’ error for our extranet users only when using .xlsx files. I removed\commented out the line above and did an IISreset and it seems to have solved the problem. Before this fix something odd was happening and I think it redirecting incorrectly and ignoring our alternate access mappings. This caused a ‘page cannot be displayed’ error due to the fact that the redirect was not allowed by our firewall (our FBA users would get the error, but internal NTLM connections never had the issue). Very strange.

    Thanks!

  3. Riva,

    What exact error did you get? is it 401 Access Denied or 404 File not Found?

    I just recently found out that the 401 Access Denied error can be solved by giving “Authenticated Users” the following permission:

    “Open Items – View the source of documents with server-side file handlers. “
